Cat Harbour is a sleepy fishing village in 1940s Newfoundland with just the expected amount of drunk sailors and loose girls. And a library. The arrival of two visitors, one quite ordinary and one quite extraordinary, changes the lives of several of its residents forever. This historically imagined tale, off-color at times and moving at others, serves up a light course of Newfoundland history and culture with tasty Sudanese, French, Austrian, British and Bostonian side dishes.

A thoroughly entertaining read cleverly based on a Newfoundland folk song. Well-written, absorbing, and frighteningly descriptive (how does the author know all that??), I highly recommend this book. Although I don't have much time for reading, I couldn't wait to pick The Feller from Fortune up every night before bed; I went to sleep much later than I intended until I was - sadly - finished.Product details

The Feller from Fortune edition by Robert Mearkle Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This unique novel with transport you into the journeys of complex and endearing characters. Twists and turns will keep you on edge once all charachters are fully and beautifully developed. I found myself crying throughout the closing chapters. I would love a sequel to continue my imaginary relationship with these special people i have met in this touching book. Thank you.
I enjoyed reading this book. The lifestyle of the region seems rather limiting yet the characters seem to endure and be resigned their lot. I hope there will be a sequel which will depict some relief and greater options for the young people of the area. From the ending, it seems possible.
I never suspected that much of interest could ever happen in a tiny fishing village in Newfoundland, but Rob Mearkle's story proved me wrong. I was totally absorbed in the goings-on of Cat Harbour and had a hard time putting this book down. The characters, with all their quirks and flaws, are extremely likeable, and I love the way the author tells the distinct background story of each while showing how their paths intertwine. It's a funny, heartwarming, engaging read that I highly recommend!
Not a bad read if you like books about interesting characters and thinking about why people act as they do. Kept my interest and might not be a bad book club selection to prompt lots of discussions. Have I read better - for sure. I don't know if I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it if you like the type.
Set in Newfoundland in a fishing village with a varied cast of characters made for an interesting read. The author was able to mix all of these characters into an enjoyable book. Loose girls, drunk sailors and shady characters were expected. A small town librarian, an educated non native man, and a precocious young lady created more bends and twists than expected. I loved how the author developed the most intersting of these characters and made their lives intersect. Looking forward to another book by this author, maybe a continuation of this one, as I was not redy to say good bye to these characters.
It is a page turner, was very entertaining and easy to read - witty, interesting, keeps you guessing and makes you sympathize with each hero and heroine. The story and the characters are very real and relatable, none of them are perfect, they are just human with weaknesses and challenges that regular everyday humans face and have to overcome. Throughout reading you get more and more attached to the characters and the plot, has a positive and very nostalgic ending, make me want to read more and more. When I reached the end of the book I did not want it to end, and frankly would like to see a sequel to the story. A firm recommend from me!
Mearkle tells us the story of very regular people, living very regular lives, until a very regular event changes everything. It reminded me of South american narratives of old little towns where the borders between what's ordinary and what's fantastic are pretty fluid. There are no mythical creatures or magical events, but you have the feeling that anything could happen in this odd place.
As someone from South America myself I feel like I've just read Garcia Marquez or Jorge Amado upside down. It is not the otherness of a mysterious south we find. It is the otherness of a small island in Newfoundland. On top of that he brings in Sudan, Egypt, Boston, Paris, Berlin, and London! It is a story about people who stay put their entire lives; and about people who travel very far before they can find their home. I love it.
A thoroughly entertaining read cleverly based on a Newfoundland folk song. Well-written, absorbing, and frighteningly descriptive (how does the author know all that??), I highly recommend this book. Although I don't have much time for reading, I couldn't wait to pick The Feller from Fortune up every night before bed; I went to sleep much later than I intended until I was - sadly - finished.
